Healthcare trainees frequently ask me to recommend a bursary that can cover the major expenses of their degree. There is no government bursary for nursing students but if you are a member of the Democratic Nursing Organization of South Africa, you can apply for a bursary. The organization has launched a financial aid program for nursing students who intend to study or are studying healthcare fields in accredited institutes.
Students who are unable to afford the tuition fees of their colleges and live below the line of poverty, have a passion for studying and have obtained high grades can apply for the DENOSA Bursary. It covers major areas from psychiatric nursing to geriatric nursing and community health nursing. Come with me to explore the dimensions of DENOSA Bursary, its eligibility criteria, required documents and the application procedure.
What is DENOSA Bursary?
Before we jump to discuss the complex information related to the eligibility criteria and the application procedure, we should understand the aim of the DENOSA Bursary. Democratic Nursing Organization Of South Africa (DENOSA) is a union formed by Nomusa Philda Nzimande in 1996 to secure nurses’ interests throughout South Africa. Later, the organization launched a bursary program to promote the nursing field in the country.
The purpose of this bursary program is to assist deserving students who are enrolled in nursing courses but cannot afford the high tuition fees. Therefore, the bursary program provides them with sufficient funds so they can manage their monthly budget and pay their fees conveniently. It is not a massive bursary program that covers transportation, and accommodation but it helps students pay their tuition fees.
In the beginning, the program was for limited people but today, nursing enthusiasts from multiple sub-departments can apply for the program. However, its eligibility criteria have been tightened. Let’s discuss the core details and then the application procedure to apply to the DENOSA Bursary in short and simple steps.

Expenses Covered by DENOSA Bursary
When it comes to the covered expenses, the majority of people wonder if DENOSA Bursary provides accommodation, transportation and study material. However, the fact is completely opposite to the previous statement. Basically, the bursary is funded by a small organization that does not own millions of rands.
Additionally, the bursary is given to highly deserving students who demonstrate exceptional skills. Therefore, it does not fund a large number of students nor does it cover major expenses. However, it assists an applicant by covering a small portion of his fees each year if he persistently demonstrates extraordinary performance in the exams and is dedicated to his studies.
