Islamic Relief, established in 1984, is an independent NGO from the UK. The organization aims to improve the lives of low-income people by providing them with basic services, including education. Each year, it opens the Islamic Relief bursary for vulnerable children across South Africa.

About the Bursary

Islamic Relief bursary applies to students who are unable to fund their higher education. It prefers orphans, vulnerable children, and disabled candidates who have a drive for academics. The bursary covers their tuition fees and prescribed textbooks for the duration of their studies.

Islamic Relief Bursary Eligibility Criteria

To become eligible for the bursary, you must fulfill the following requirements.

  • The candidate can have any nationality.
  • The candidate can be of any religion.
  • The candidate must be between the ages of 18 and 24.
  • The candidate must have completed Matric.
  • The candidate must be studying in or intend to study towards an undergraduate qualification. The degree must be in one of the listed fields.
  • The candidate must be accepted or intend to get enrolled at one of the following universities. Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Durban University of Technology, Mangosuthu University of Technology, Central University of Technology, Nelson Mandela University, Rhodes University, North-West University, Sefako Makgatho Health Science University, University of Cape Town, University of Pretoria, University of South Africa (UNISA), University of Stellenbosch, University of the Free State, University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of Mpumalanga, University of Johannesburg, University of Fort Hare, University of Limpopo, University of the Western Cape, University of the Witwatersrand, University of Venda, University of Zululand, Vaal University of Technology, and Walter Sisulu University.
  • The candidate must not have debt owed to the university.
  • The candidate must not have a household income of more than R450,000 per annum.
  • Preferences will be given to candidates with disabilities.

Download the application form (islamic-relief.org.za/bursary-fund-for-tertiary-education/). Print a hard copy and submit it along with the required documents (PDF format) to [email protected]. In the subject line, write “Islamic Relief Bursary Application 2024”.

Documents Required for the Bursary

Upload the clear copies of the following supported documents along with the application form. Any missing item can result in disqualification.

  • An ID document/ passport/ refugee status/ or asylum seeker status.
  • Matric academic records (degree certificate and transcripts).
  • Latest academic transcripts, if the candidate is still studying.
  • Proof of provisional or final acceptance from the university.
  • A quotation for tuition fees.
  • parents/guardians’ income proof. It should be their latest payslips if they are employed, and an affidavit if they are unemployed (it should not be older than 6 months).
  • Parents’ death certificate if applicable.
  • Details of any other bursaries you have applied for or are currently receiving.
  • A motivational letter (about the course, personal/ academic achievements, community involvement, and reasons why you should get the bursary, each having 250 words).
