What Is the Star of Stars Competition?
The Star of Stars Competition recognises the most outstanding Grade 12 learners from disadvantaged schools in the Free State. Finalists and winners receive full tuition funding, mentorship, and personal development support throughout their undergraduate degree at UFS.
Who Is Eligible?
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Enrolled in Matric during 2025
- Residing in one of Free State’s five districts: Fezile Dabi, Lejweleputswa, Motheo, Thabo Mofutsanyana, or Xhariep
- Attending a Quintile 1, 2, or 3 school within the Free State
- Demonstrated strong academic results, leadership, or community involvement
- Applied to study at UFS for 2026 before the competition deadline
- Application form signed and stamped by the school principal
Selection Process
The competition follows a multi-stage evaluation:
- Applicants submit entry forms with supporting documents
- The top 20 finalists are announced by the end of September 2025
- Finalists must achieve a minimum APS score of 35 in Grade 12 results
- The top 10 winners are announced in January 2026 after the Matric exam results
- Winners then take part in an exclusive induction camp at a private game reserve and receive ongoing academic and personal development support

Documents Required
When applying, submit the following certified documents:
- Certified copies of Grade 11 final results and Grade 12 March & June results
- Certified ID copy
- Motivational letter (~500 words) describing your achievements and aspirations
- Certificates or proof of leadership, community, or academic achievements
- Completed application form signed and stamped by your school principal
Incomplete or unsigned applications risk disqualification.

Download and complete the official Star of Stars application form. You can submit your full application either by post (to UFS Student Recruitment Services, PO Box 339, Bloemfontein, 9300) or hand-deliver it to the Wekkie Saayman Building at UFS Bloemfontein campus.
