• Non-Degree Visiting Student Researcher VSR students must be enrolled with an SA university. They are required to apply for a one-year research program at any US university.
• Master’s or Doctorate students may apply for a two-year or four-year program, as applicable.

Eligibility Criteria

• The applicant must be a South African national or permanent resident. They should have a minimum of five years of permanent residency status in South Africa. Please note that South Africans with dual nationality are deemed not eligible for the scholarship program.
• For PhD Researchers: The applicant must be currently registered for a PhD at a South African university for the duration of their degree. Or, they should be in the process of registration as a PhD student at a South African university.
• For Master’s Degree Students: They must have a 4-year bachelor’s degree, BTech degree, or a 3-year Bachelor’s degree with Honors. Current 4th-year students or Honors students may also apply for the opportunity on the condition that they must be able to complete the degree and provide results by November 2024.
• For Doctorate Students: They must have a Masters degree. If they are currently registered in a Master’s program, they must complete the degree and be able to provide results by November 2024.

Documents Required for the Scholarship

You are required to upload clear and scanned copies of the following documents along with the application form.

• The applicant’s transcripts, as applicable.
• The applicant’s graduation certificate. It should be accompanied by an explanation sheet of the grading system used by your university in South Africa.
• All the documents must be in the English language.

The three documents for each completed degree are required to be uploaded by November 2024. Certificates and explanation sheets should be in one file before you upload them to the application system. Please note that final selected students will be required to hand in the original transcripts and degree certificates, which will be sent to the US universities for verification.

Test Scores

GRE and TOEFL test scores are not required when you first apply for the scholarship. Once you are selected as a semi-finalist, Fullbright will give you a voucher to take your tests free of charge. If you have already completed these tests on your own before applying within 24 months, the test reports will be considered for evaluation.

Study Plan
