The Australian Government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), supports global education and skills development to strengthen international partnerships and promote sustainable growth.

Through the Australia Awards Scholarships programme, the government offers fully funded, long-term study opportunities to students from developing countries. The programme aims to equip recipients with knowledge and skills that will help drive positive change and development in their home countries.

About the Australian International Scholarship Programme

Applications are open for the 2027 academic year. Scholarships are awarded to students from eligible developing countries for Undergraduate or Postgraduate studies in priority fields at participating Australian universities and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions.

Eligible countries include nations across Africa, Asia, and the Pacific region. Priority study areas differ by country. For African applicants, priority fields include Agriculture and Food Security, Climate Change, Foreign Policy and International Security, Gender, Disability and Social Inclusion, and Mining and Energy.

Scholarship Value and Coverage

Australia Awards Scholarships are fully funded and cover the full duration of the approved study programme, including any required preparatory courses.

The scholarship covers full tuition fees, return economy-class flights, an establishment allowance, a fortnightly living allowance (CLE), Introductory Academic Program (IAP), Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), English language training (if required), academic support services, and fieldwork support for eligible Master’s and research students.

Recipients are required to sign a contract with the Commonwealth of Australia and must comply with all scholarship conditions.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be citizens of an eligible African, Asian, or Pacific country. They must be at least 25 years old on 1 February 2027 and hold an undergraduate qualification equivalent to an Australian bachelor’s degree.

Applicants must not already hold or be undertaking a master’s degree and must apply for full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study at a participating Australian university or TAFE institution. They must have at least five years of relevant post-graduate work experience and be employed at the time of application.

Applicants must demonstrate commitment to contributing to development in their home country and agree to return home for a minimum of two years after completing the scholarship. They must not have previously received a long-term Australia Award.

Applicants must also meet the minimum English language proficiency requirements: IELTS overall 6.5 (no band less than 6.0), TOEFL iBT 84 (minimum 21 per section), or PTE Academic overall 58 (minimum 50 per skill), with valid scores as required.

Failure to meet all eligibility criteria will result in disqualification.
