About the Old Mutual Accounting Bursary Programme – Fields Covered

Old Mutual is offering bursaries for the 2026 academic year to students pursuing Accounting Science (Chartered Accounting stream) at any of the following institutions:

  • University of the Witwatersrand
  • University of the Free State
  • University of Fort Hare

The bursary is aimed at students who are passionate about a career in Chartered Accounting.

The bursary will cover:

  • Full tuition fees
  • Study materials
  • Accommodation in residence
  • Meals
  • Return flights home (if studying away from home)

Students will also gain access to vacation work opportunities during holidays and receive support for the entire duration of their degree. Those who perform well academically will be eligible for further incentives.

After graduation, recipients will enter the Old Mutual Chartered Accounting Training (OMCAT) Programme, gaining exposure across:

  • Accounting and external reporting
  • Financial management
  • Management decision-making and control
  • Governance, taxation, and risk management

What an Accounting Career Involves

Chartered Accountants work across multiple financial functions, including:

  • Managing financial systems and budgets
  • Performing financial audits
  • Providing financial advice
  • Preparing reports and financial documents
  • Assessing financial risks
  • Advising companies on financial decisions
  • Taking on leadership or management roles

Eligibility Requirements for the Old Mutual Accounting Bursary

Applicants must meet these minimum criteria:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must be in Matric or have completed Matric
  • Must not hold any post-Matric qualifications
  • Must intend to study Accounting Science (CA stream)
  • Must have applied to one of the listed universities
  • Minimum 70% for Mathematics (not Math Literacy)
  • Minimum 60% for English HL or 70% for English FAL
  • Minimum 70% in all other subjects
  • Must commit to joining the OMCAT Programme and working at Old Mutual after graduation
  • Preference given to students from underrepresented groups or disadvantaged backgrounds, including candidates with disabilities

Selection for the Old Mutual Accounting Bursary Programme

Shortlisted applicants will be contacted by 30 November 2025 to complete psychometric assessments. Finalists will be invited to a selection day for interviews. Provisional offers will be made and confirmed upon receipt of final Matric results and proof of university acceptance.
