The Competition Tribunal is South Africa’s adjudicative body for matters of competition law. It handles large merger assessments, urgent interim relief applications, and rules on prohibited or anti-competitive practices.
The David Lewis Competition Law Scholarship was created to honour the Tribunal’s first Chairperson and to address the limited availability of competition law qualifications in South Africa.
About the Competition Tribunal Scholarship – Fields Covered
The Competition Tribunal is inviting students to apply for the David Lewis Competition Law Scholarship for the 2026 academic year.
The scholarship will fund students pursuing a Master’s in Law (LLM) with a focus on Competition Law.
The scholarship aims to:
- Support talent: Help capable students advance in the niche field of competition law
- Develop skills: Equip future legal experts to protect and enhance fair market competition
- Create opportunities: Provide practical experience and training
- Give back: Contribute to building local expertise in competition law
About the Scholarship – Expenses Covered and Selection
The scholarship will cover:

- Vacation work at the Competition Tribunal
Selection will be based on:
- Academic performance
- Financial need
- Alignment with the scholarship’s purpose
Shortlisted candidates will be contacted within 2 weeks after the closing date and may be interviewed by a panel. If you do not hear back, consider your application unsuccessful.
Eligibility Requirements for the Scholarship
Applicants must meet these criteria:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must have secured admission or be enrolled in a recognised Master’s in Law program in South Africa
- Must have a strong academic record
- Must be willing to conduct research in competition law
- Must intend to pursue a career in competition law
