The Gauteng City Region Academy Bursary, often referred to simply as the GCRA Bursary, is a major educational funding programme offered by the Gauteng Department of Education. It aims to make higher education more affordable and accessible for young people who live in the Gauteng province of South Africa. Through this programme, eligible learners can receive financial support for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies at accredited institutions, enabling them to focus on their academic goals without the heavy burden of tuition and study‑related expenses.
Who Can Apply
To be considered for the GCRA Bursary, applicants must meet several eligibility requirements. You must be a South African citizen who is between the ages of eighteen and thirty‑five and reside within the Gauteng province. You must also have completed your Matric in Gauteng or be already accepted or registered to study towards an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification at a recognised public or private institution in South Africa, including universities, universities of technology and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.
Although the bursary is open to students in all fields of study, the programme gives preference to applicants pursuing qualifications that align with the Gauteng Growth and Transformation Plan 2030 (GGT2030). These priority sectors include subjects like information technology and computer science, engineering, finance and accounting, civil construction, tourism, transport and logistics, hospitality management, and arts and design — areas seen as crucial for the province’s economic development.
There are also special categories of applicants who automatically qualify for consideration, although they must still submit an application. These include top achievers from Gauteng‑based schools, the top three learners from no‑fee paying schools and top three learners from Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) schools in the province.
What the Bursary Covers
The GCRA Bursary is comprehensive and designed to ease the financial burden of higher education. For successful applicants, the funding typically covers:
• Registration and tuition fees at the institution where you are studying.
• Accommodation costs, with a maximum support of R65 000 for on‑campus residence and up to R47 000 for off‑campus or private accommodation.
• Books and study materials needed to complete your course.
• Laptop allowance to support your digital learning needs.
• Living allowance for students who live in private or off‑campus accommodation.
These benefits are intended to help students manage the core costs associated with their studies so they can focus on learning and completing their qualification successfully. Funds for registration and tuition are usually paid directly to the institution, while allowances for laptops, books and living costs may be paid directly to the student.
How to Apply
Applications for the GCRA Bursary for the 2026 academic year must be submitted through the official GCRA online portal before the closing date, which is 28 February 2026. Prospective applicants will need to create an account on the portal, complete their personal and academic information, and upload all required documents.
Supporting documents typically include a certified copy of your South African identity document, your Matric certificate or most recent academic record, proof of acceptance or registration at an accredited institution, proof of Gauteng residence, and a motivational letter explaining why you are applying for the bursary and how it will help you achieve your educational goals. If applicable, a certified disability or medical report and proof of parent or guardian income are also required.
Once the application has been submitted and the closing date has passed, the GCRA will review all entries. Shortlisted candidates will usually be contacted within three to four weeks after the deadline. If you do not receive feedback within that time, it is generally understood that your application was not successful.
