The Joe Morolong Assmang Bursary supports students from the Joe Morolong Local Municipality area to pursue undergraduate studies in technical and non-technical fields. Assmang Black Rock Mine, one of the world’s largest high-grade manganese reserves, partners with the local municipality to fund students aiming to develop skills for mining, science, engineering, and other critical sectors.
Fields of Study Covered
- Technical Qualifications (Engineering, Science, Mining-related degrees)
- Non-Technical Qualifications (Commerce, Humanities, Social Sciences, etc.)
The bursary prioritises students intending to contribute to the mining sector or community development.
Who Can Apply
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- South African citizen
- Aged between 17 and 35 years
- Reside within Joe Morolong Local Municipality, Northern Cape
- Currently in Matric or completed Matric
- Achieved:
- Level 5 for Mathematics and Physical Science if applying for a Science field
- Minimum overall average of 60% if applying for a Non-Science field
- Level 5 for Mathematics and Physical Science if applying for a Science field
- Full-time study in 2026 at a recognised South African university or university of technology
- Financially needy and meet the means test requirements
- From historically disadvantaged backgrounds
- Not currently receiving any other bursary or student loan funding
Preference is given to students from historically disadvantaged institutions (HDIs).

- May include accommodation and living expenses (subject to approval)
Required Documents
Applicants must submit certified copies of:
- South African ID
- Matric certificate or most recent academic results (Grade 11 final results and Matric results if currently in school)
- Full academic record/transcripts (if already studying)
- Proof of acceptance/registration at a tertiary institution for 2026
- Parents/guardians ID documents
- Parents/guardians’ proof of income (payslips, affidavit if unemployed, or proof of grants/pension)
- Proof of residence (from Joe Morolong offices or tribal office)
